There has been a huge gap between my post since last summer, but I have not stopped trying to make change in the world! I just finished school, and in an effort to keep everyone updated, I have created a newsletter for everyone!

Where is Shirley Now?
Boston + the suburbs

Bye Bye to MIT
I am about to start the next phase of my life–life after college. I finished my Masters of Engineering this past June, and got a chance to work on a fantastic project at Sloan for my thesis (the project was written up in Technology Review http://www.technologyreview.com/Biztech/20872/page1/). I loved every bit of MIT over the 5 years I spent there, and am sad to leave! I am coming to campus to work on some other projects though, so I will come back to visit my alma mater often.

Current Projects
My friends and I won the IDEAS competition and got a grant to work on a novel wheelchair for all kinds of terrain in the developing world. I am working on the invention to venture portion of the project this year, and am learning how to create a good business model. In addition, I am working a team to develop an online community for the mobility aids class at MIT. To expand my horizons in the international policy field, I am working as a research assistant with Science Commons and a volunteer for the Creative Commons China Mainland.

Upcoming Projects
In August, I am going to start my full time job as a Technical Advisor at Ropes & Gray in Boston. Working in the Intellectual Property Group, I will be getting training to become a Patent Agent. Also, I am expecting to start law school in Fall 2009 while working for the law firm part time.Right now, I am working on law school apps for schools in Boston, and am studying for the LSATs during my free time.

Life
In June, I spent 2 weeks in Seattle to visit my family. My little sister, Ruby, just graduated from high school, and will be attending University of Washington in the fall. She has interest in marketing/advertising, and we hope that she will become a successful business woman in the future! My boyfriend and I (plus our two fat cats) are moving to Saugus to a townhouse! I am going to be busy furniture shopping in the coming month :)
